Photo Dump

I'm sorry I've been so quiet! Usually I take Sunday to focus on lining up my posts for the week and establishing some type of order in my apartment. It seems like this week I was lucky to buy groceries. I just haven't had time to eat them. ;) Here are some recent snap shots.

Apparently I only take photos of my food. Sorry guys, it was a week of good eating! I promise I'll be back with more content tomorrow. Have a great day!

Bento #20

Bento #20

Contents:
 - Broccoli & Carrot Stir fry
 - Sesame Tofu
 - Seasoned Rice w/ Corn

My cousin recently turned me on to a new way to make stir fry. She starts with a base of soy sauce, vinegar and honey and then adds a few more flavors usually based on what she has available. For mine I added ginger paste and Cheyenne. It's really good!

Favorite Places: Bodega

It's the long awaited Bodega post! I've been saying for months that I would show you around a mexican grocery store. Today is the day! I LOVE bodegas! When I was little my Ita would take me shopping with her and while she did shop at traditional American grocery stores, we would always make an extra stop at a bodega on the way home. There are a lot of things you just can't get anywhere else. Here are some of my favorites from my local bodega:

IMG_1799

At my local store the first thing you run into is a giant shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe. To most Americans this might seem odd. It is huge, it is gaudy, it is covered in tacky silk flowers and candles with images of saints on them. To me this is home.

My Ita was fashionable. She was always dressed to the nines in an outfit following the latest trends with her hair and makeup perfect. She also carried a special place in her heart for kitsch. Her house was decorated with classic mid-century furniture nestled atop thick red plush carpet. It was peppered throughout with an incredible assortment of knick-knacks and mementos collected over the years. They ranged everywhere from elegant crystal and jade sculptures to chinese lanterns and sequined sombreros. I may have missed out on perfect hair and make up, but the kitsch lives strong within me. I keep a tiny Dia De Los Muertos shrine in my apartment now. It just looks right.

IMG_1807

Were you looking to create a tiny shrine of your own? Look no further friend, everything you need is right here! The selection of candles in my local bodega is staggering.

IMG_1808

I actually own these ones. :)

Moving into the food category. You are bound to encounter a wide array of dried chilies. They vary immensely so it's best to head into the store with a recipe and Chile name in hand rather than try to blindly select one from the masses.

IMG_1797

I primarily use Chile Anchos. They are rich in flavor and color and mild in heat. I use them to make enchiladas, but they can be used in hundreds of sauces and soups.

IMG_1810

I addition to a meat and dairy counter my store features a fruit carving counter! How awesome is that? You can buy fresh sliced tropical fruits - On a Stick! So amazingly good.

The back half of my store leaves the groceries behind and becomes a super store. It's pretty incredible. They carry all kinds of clothing from soccer shirts and baby clothes to quinceanera dresses and boys tuxedos. There are CD's, DVD's wedding decorations, lawn ornaments and intricately inlaid wooden tables like the one pictured above. Crazy right?!?

Remember my embroidery find? I got it at the Bodega!

My favorite part of the bodega is the massive pastry case as you head for the checkout. Word of warning: Mexican pastries are beautiful hands down, but they are nothing like the pastries you would find at your corner bistro. The first two pastries pictured are conchas the last are elotito. There are some noticeable differences between these pastries and the ones you're probably used to.

The first is sugar. They may be sweet rolls but they are surprisingly low in sugar. My Ita didn't like them for this reason. They look like they would be almost donut like when in reality, they're only slightly sweetened. The other most notable difference is texture. I'm not entirely sure why because I've never seen them made, but they are really dry. Even fresh out of the oven. They are not at all buttery or chewy.

I know I probably just painted a horrible picture of them but I wasn't trying to, promise! I am seriously addicted to these things! They are the perfect accompaniment to a morning cup of coffee. The perfect snack to pair with a mug of hot chocolate!  If you ever find yourself in need of a good sturdy bread to use in a bread pudding - yeah, best bread pudding I've had in my life. On your way out of the store go ahead and pick one out. You will hopefully be pleasantly surprised!

Next time I'll take pics of my staple purchases.

What I wore 8.19.11

Last Sunday I woke up, went outside and breathed the first crisp breath of air signaling the coming of fall. It's not here yet, it's actually pretty muggy right now, but it's coming. And for now, that's enough.

I met my cousin for a breakfast of macaron's and mocha's and this is what I wore:

PPR Challenge 2 Completed

Here's the finished pic I promised for challenge 2. This week I was really busy and wasn't able to take on the 3rd challenge. In all honesty, I wasn't that disappointed. I don't know how many of you actually watch the show, but last weeks episode may have been the biggest real slip they've had since the series started. The challenge was stilts. They designed runway outfits for people on stilts. Then the designers that got too campy and costumesque were frowned upon. Really? Stilts?

Why were they surprised when they weren't taken seriously? I really hope this isn't the start of a downward spiral. The episode that when reviewed by the producers hints that it might be time to call it quits. Ugh, I miss Santiago, and Christian. To be fair, I probably miss Christians tattoos more than the boy himself. Do you remember the squid? LOVE.

I digress... The challenge was to create an outfit from supplies purchased at a pet store. This is what I made:

Birthday in Instagram

I spent my actual birthday day in my home town with my family. My cousin hosts a tennis tournament called the McDrew Open back home every year. It always falls near my birthday and is a great place to meet up with family that I don't get to see all that often.

This year we brought ice cream cake and tiny ice cream cones to celebrate with. We left a little early to pick up my nephew so I could see him before I headed home. I really can't believe how big he is. He's 2yrs old and weighs almost 50 lbs. At this rate he will be taller than me by the time he enters middle school. He's a baby moose.

It was really low key and really fun. I couldn't believe the tiny ice cream cones. They were so cute! My Mom is so thoughtful and adorable! I'm heading out now for my birthday dinner with friends. Birthday month is pretty awesome. I think everyone should have one.

Project Project Runway

I've spent the last few nights working on my submission for the second challenge in this year's Project Project Runway. Try saying that 5 times fast. Project Project Runway was created by Kat and Susi from Just Crafty Enough. Each week they ask contestants to create a doll sized outfit that follows the guidelines issued to the real designers on the show and then upload photos of the dolls wearing the outfits to their flickr photo page.

This week's challenge was to create an outfit using materials from a pet shop. Here are a few progress pics. I'll post my finished outfit later this evening.

Movie Nights

The other night before going to see Cowboys and Aliens I went ot My cousin Ginny's house for dinner. We couldn't decide what we were hungry for so we just made everything that sounded good. We ended up with pan seared tofu, a tangy stir fry and veggie BLT's. It was amazing!

IMG_3757

IMG_3763

In general I am not a fan of mayonnaise. There's just something about it that grosses me out. I always order my sandwiches dry and really only eat it if it's completely hidden in something like potato salad. That being said, Ginny got some out for the BLT's so I added the tiniest smear and actually enjoyed it.

We saw the movie at the Moolah Lounge. The building was originally a Shriner's temple, but was converted into movie theatre in 2004. They have a bar & a bowling alley in the basement. This was my first time attending a movie there and I can't believe I hadn't gone sooner. I guess I thought it was just a bar with a few big screen TVs, but that is totally not the case. It's a huge full sized theatre with half of the room void of theatre seats. In their place are large overstuffed leather couches and end tables. They have a regular concession stand for traditional movie fare but also allow you to bring drinks up from the bar. I really don't think I want to visit another theatre after this. It was great!

The movie itself was a little darker than I was expecting with a few torture scenes that were uncomfortable to watch, but the action was incredible. In the first few minutes of the movie the main character pulls off a move that made my jaw drop. I could probably watch it on repeat for hours. I would definitely recommend it.

Last night I went to another movie but this one was a free screening of Spirited Away in a parking lot. It was so much fun! I had had a really stressful day and then raised all of my weights at the gym so I was ready for a relaxing evening. This was the perfect event! Everyone brought lawn chairs and blankets and camped out in front of a giant inflatable screen.

IMG_0003

We brought our own drinks and snacks but there were local vendors there selling hot dogs, hamburgers and gelato to anyone that was interested. The weather was perfect and we ended up sitting next to a large group of friends that I didn't know were going. This was the first event in a series. Now I can't wait for the next one!

Don't for get to enter to win an Instax Mini camera in my Birthday giveaway! Winner will be drawn on Sunday!

August Giveaway! - Birthday Edition

For this months giveaway I'm sharing a little birthday love by gifting you one of my favorite things.

New Instax Mini

An Instax Mini Camera! Remember this guy? It pretty much hasn't left my side since I bought it. When I got my new camera bag (*cough - purse*) I built it it's own custom sized pouch inside. I won't lie, the film is crazy expensive, but I'm very careful with lining up my shots and tend to only take one or two at a time. Tiny polaroids are too fun to pass up!

Here are some of the shot's I've taken with mine:

The giveaway includes one Instax Mini camera, new & in the box, and one packet of Instax Mini film - cause there's nothing more sad than opening up your dream robot and realizing there are no batteries in the house. Are you ready to enter?!? Here are the rules:

To enter just sign your name in a comment and tell me what your favorite birthday cake flavor is. If you avoid cake like the plague and only celebrate special occasions with sour kraut you can tell me that too. I'll probably just look at you weird. Right now mine is coconut, although that peach cake I made a few weeks ago is a close second!

For a bonus entry tweet a link to my giveaway or post a link on your blog. (Make sure you post an additional comment here letting me know so you get your bonus entry!)

This giveaway is Closed! Thanks to all who entered, Congrats to Marcie!
